Court Cards and rulership

Postby peregrinus on Sun Jan 03, 2010 5:41 pm

Greetings to all of you!

I've been doing some notes on Minor Arcana and Court Cards (all this Knight/King/Prince business was doing my head in) and there is one issue I cannot get my head around.
You know when you draw a circle divided in 12 sections each assigned to a zodiac sign and there you assign your Court Cards rulership with your Prince of Disks from 20° Aries to 20°Taurus and so on, right? Now my simplistic understanding of Court Cards is that King is the initial force, not long lasting, sort of like ignition in the engine, then you've got your Queens grounding and evolving the energy initiated by Kings and finally you get Princes who take what their 'parents' had and carry on. Now I don't know how about you but for me it sounds pretty much like cardinal/fixed/mutable division in astrology.
Here's my question - why on earth, let's say, King of Swords 'goes' from Fixed Earth (Taurus) to Mutable Air (Gemini)? It would make a helluva more sense to me if a Prince of Disks was transforming into King/Knight of Swords taking the path from Mutable Earth (Virgo) to Cardinal Air (Libra).
Could anyone comment where did those attributions come from?
Regards,

I once thought that way too, but the queen as a fixed sign troubled me (I felt those signs belonged to the princes). So I meditated on it. I am no expert on astrology, and I could be all wrong, but this is how I see it:

The knight (on horseback, he can freely turn this way and that) as mutable (changeableness, adaptability) because the energy is swift and not long to last.
The queen (throned, she organizes the knights 'orders') as cardinal (initiative, the beginning of a season) because it is the generative Heh (mother) force, giving birth to...
The prince (in a chariot, like a mobile throne) as fixed (steady, stable) the because he is the combined energies of the mother (but not as lasting) and father (but not as quick), he carries out their wishes.

The last 10 degrees of a sign is not very strong, the power is degrading or deteriorating.
The first 10 degrees of a sign is just the beginning (idea?) of the force of the sign.
The middle 10 degrees of a sign is the strength or fruit of the sign.
The Elements are mixed, as in nature, so the court cards have the last decan of the previous sign.
The pure Elements are the Aces (they also represent Spirit).

Does this make any sense?

Sorry, I haven't been here for a while.
And yes, it does shed some light on my 'problem' and gives some food for thoughts. Thank you!
